Humans

Introduction

Humans are the basic stock which all the other humanoid, monstrous humanoid, etc. races were based on. Humans were the most mentally complex creatures at the beginning of Time, hence they had the most impact on the resulting flood of magical beings.

Humans are the most diverse of the sentient races. They are among the shorter-lived, and as such, they are more flexible and faster to adapt to new circumstances. In appearance, they vary as much as they do in our world. On Krosa, they tend to have dark skin, eyes, and hair. Think Middle-Eastern and Indian, with an occasional sub-Saharan African, East Asian, or Pacific islander.

Society and Culture

This varies from one group of humans to another, and some are more influenced by other races than others. See the Krosa page for details on the Krosan culture and society. The most common (human) foreigners will be from:

Religion

Humans follow all sorts of religions, even devoting themselves to the patrons of other races, for all sorts of reasons. However, most people are members of the majority religion in their region.

Most Krosans are Believers, that is, devotees of the New Religion, acknowledging God (Ela) as the supreme deity. Some follow the Old Religion, either as practiced in the Skandrian Empire, or another variant. Some follow foreign gods. The Sea Dragon has a following among the sailors and fisherfolk. Druids are bound to the rhythms of nature. See the gods page for more information.

Law

Varies from culture to culture.

Relations with outsiders

Varies from culture to culture. The humans of Krosa are fairly isolated. Non-humans are regarded with suspicion, but not hatred or fear, except for evil creatures such as devils, demons, and the undead. Humans of the mainland empires have much more contact with non-humans. In areas at war, enemy non-human races are demonized.

Classes

Humans are found in all the classes, but some are more common than others on Krosa. You may play a character of any of the standard classes. Just keep your background consistent with the theme and setting of 1001 Nights.

Language

Humans speak many different languages. However, this has been simplified for the sake of the game. The major human languages are as follows:

Names

Names vary depending on the culture. On Krosa, humans usually go by a personal name followed by a family name (patrilineal) or the father's name, and sometimes a nickname. Those rare Krosans who have made the pilgrimage to the holy city receive the honorific Haj. The names presented as semi-Arabic would sound foreign to the average Krosan, who would barely know even one prayer in the Desert tongue. The names translated into English would be names in Common.

Male personal names (Krosa): Abbas, Abdul-Ati, Abdul-Aziz, Abdul-Fattah, Abdul-Hadi, Abdul-Hakim, Abdul-Halim, Abdul-Hamid, Abdul-Jabir, Abdul-Karim, Abdul-Latif, Abdul-Majid, Abdul-Malik, Abdul-Mekares, Abdul-Musin, Abdul-Muti, Abdul-Kadir, Abdul-Rahim, Abdul-Rauf, Abdul-Razik, Abdul-Salam, Abdul-Wahab, Adil, Ahmed, Aladdin, Ali, Amar, Assad, Ashraf, Asim, Bahir, Bakor, Fadil, Fahim, Fakhur, Farid, Fahruk, Gulzar, Habib, Hasan, Hashim, Hasim, Ibrahim, Ihsan, Izaldin, Jafar, Jamil, Jinan, Kamal, Kateb, Khalil, Manal, Mansur, Mazin, Mehemet, Mehennad, Mouza, Mukhtar, Mustafa, Nabil, Nadim, Nayil, Najib, Nizar, Nureddin, Rab, Rafik, Raghid, Rashid, Rustam, Safa, Sagir, Saladdin, Salim, Salman, Samir, Shadi, Shafik, Shakil, Shakir, Sharif, Suhail, Tahir, Umar, Walid, Yakub, Yasir, Zafir, Zahir, Zak, Zuhair.

"Abdul" means "servant of", and the compound names each take one of the ninety-nine qualities of Ela, so the "Abdul" names basically all mean "servant of God." The names get abbreviated into one element or the other, so half the male population on Krosa seems to be called Abdul.
