- HELP
EVDPD is a level III exerciser diagnostic for the PCL11-B
Parallel Communications Link.
Other VAX PCL11 diagnostics are EVDPE (Level IIR Exerciser)
and EVDPC (Level III Repair)
Help about general DIAGNOSTIC SUPERVISOR topics is available
via the standard "HELP" commands.
- DEVICE
EVDPD is a VAX-11 Parallel Communication Link (PCL11) exerciser
which has been written to exercise a full or partial set of PCL11
units. Up to eight units may be tested on each processor.
The minimum number of units is one.
The exerciser is made up of two tests, each of which exists in
its own program section. The two tests, the Conversational Mode
Test, and the Automatic Mode Test, exercise the PCL network by
transmitting random length data to each of the nodes on the network.

Device: Parallel Communications Link
Link: DWn
Recommended Generic: XPan
Additional information:
UNIBUS CSR [Octal 760000-777776]
UNIBUS vector [Octal 0-776]
UNIBUS BR level [Decimal 4-7]
NOTE!!! The "a" in the Generic Name must be the TDM
address of this VAX System controller.
NOTE!!! The "n" in the Generic Name MUST be the TDM address
of this VAX System node.
NOTE!!! The driver disable switch on the M8003 module must
be enabled. The switch is in the enable position when
switched toward the cable and connector on the edge
of the module.
NOTE!!! The Transmitter address must be the same as the Receiver
address or the diagnostic will fail.
Other VAX PCL11 diagnostics are EVDPE (Level IIR) and EVDPC (Level III)

- PCL11
This diagnostic program has a stringent method of specifying
the units to be tested. Each PCL controller to be tested is
specified first, followed by the nodes to be transmitted to
by the PCL controller. The controller is always specified
as unit zero. The node has a unit number which corresponds
to its TDM node number. For instance, if controller A is to
transmit to nodes 2 and 4 the following sequence would be
used:
DS>ATT PCL11 DW0 XPA0 764200 360 5 ;Attaches PCL11 Controller
;at address 764200
;with vector 360 and BR level 5
DS>ATT PCL11 DW0 XPA2 764200 360 5 ;Attach node 2
DS>ATT PCL11 DW0 XPA4 764200 360 5 ;Attach node 4
DS>SEL XPA0 ;Select PCL11 Controller
DS>SEL XPA2 ;Select node 2
DS>SEL XPA4 ;Select node 4
DS>START
THE PROGRAM SHOULD NOW BE RUNNING.
- DATA-PATTERNS
A new, random data pattern is transmitted after every twenty
passes. Data length as well as content are changed.
- SECTIONS
There are two sections in this diagnostic.
They are:
1. Conversational Mode Test
2. Automatic Mode Test (default)
- EVENT-FLAGS
This diagnostic uses three event flags, as follows:
Event Flag Description
10 When this flag is set soft error
reports are partially inhibited.
The first occurence of each error
is reported for each node, but
further occurences are not reported.
11 This event flag pertains to the
Automatic Mode test. When this
flag is set the first attached
controller becomes Master. If this
flag is not set, and flag 12 is set
the first controller becomes secondary.
12 This event flag pertains to the
Automatic Mode test. When this
flag is set, and flag 11 is set,
the second attached controller
becomes secondary. If flag 11 is not
set, and 12 is, then the first
controller is secondary.
- QUICK
The QUICK feature is not implemented in this diagnostic.
- SUMMARY
The summary table is designed to show the operator
a summary of the soft errors which have occured in either
the receiver or transmitter hardware on each VAX11.
The summary table is printed in the following manner:
ERROR NO. of DESCRIPTION
NUMBER OCCURENCE
1 XXX ILLEGAL TRANSMITTER INTERRUPT
2 XXX NON-EXISTANT MEMORY
. . .
24 XXX DATA MESSAGE TOO SHORT
There are twenty-four soft errors reported by this diagnostic.
These errors remain the same for all tests. The transmitter
errors are numbered from one to thirteen, and the receiver
errors from fourteen to twenty-four.
For specific soft error information type the following:
HELP EVDPD SUMMARY XMTR
HELP EVDPD SUMMARY RCVR
- XMTR
The following is a list of transmitter soft errors:
SOFT ERROR DESCRIPTION
NUMBER
1 ILLEGAL TRANSMITTER INTERRUPT
2 NON-EXISTANT MEMORY
3 MEMORY OVERFLOW
4 RECEIVER ACCEPTED A NULL
5 RECEIVER OFF-LINE
6 WORD OR C.R.C. REJECTED
7 MISCELLANIOUS TRANSMIT ERROR
8 MASTER DOWN
9 TRANSMITTER TIMEOUT
10 SILO DATA OVERRUN
11 MESSAGE WAS TRUNCATED
12 MESSAGE WAS NOT TRUNCATED
13 RECEIVER REJECTED DATA
- RCVR
The following is a list of receiver soft errors:
SOFT ERROR DESCRIPTION
NUMBER
14 INVALID RECEIVER INTERRUPT
15 NON-EXISTANT MEMORY
16 DATA OVERFLOW
17 TRANSMITTER OFF-LINE
18 C.R.C. ERROR
19 MISCELLANIOUS RECEIVER ERROR
20 DATA PARITY ERROR
21 RECEIVER TIMEOUT
22 DATA MESSAGE TOO LONG
23 DATA COMPARISON ERROR
24 DATA MESSAGE TOO SHORT
- ERRORS
Errors are reported by the program as they occur (if, in
the case of soft errors, they are not inhibited.) The
report conforms to the Diagnostic Supervisor Error Report
format, and consists of a description of the error, the
test number, the subtest number, device name, and basic
and extended error information. Program soft errors are
numbered from one to twenty-four, hard errors are numbered
from twenty-five to thirty-eight. The hard errors vary from
test to test, while the soft errors remain the same. To
obtain a listing of the test soft errors type the following:

HELP EVDPD SUMMARY RCVR
- REQUIREMENTS
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS :
VAX Processor with 512Kb memory (minimum)
PCL11-B
Valid UNIBUS configuration
SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS :
VAX Diagnostic Supervisor (version 6.7 or later)
- START
After the appropriate nodes have been attached and selected
the tests may be started with the "start" command to the
Diagnostic Supervisor. The following switches are necessary
to start the two tests.
1. Conversational Mode Test
DS> START/SEC:CONVERSATIONAL
2. Automatic Mode Test
DS> START
Automatic Mode is the default test selection.
For further help in attaching and selecting the appropriate
devices type:
HELP EVDPD ATTACH PCL11
- COMMANDS
There are several operator commands which are necessary to
run the exerciser in Conversational Mode. A further group
of commands allows for the printing and clearing of the tables.
The specific commands are listed in the help sections as noted
below. With all of the commands, the minimum amount which may
be entered is contained within brackets. No misspellings of
the command word will be accepted. Some commands may be executed
with or without arguments. If this is the case the arguments
will be listed in angle brackets. A more complete explanation
of the various commands is given within the EVDPD Document.
