The History of Time

The Myth

Before time began, life did not know itself. Humans were as beasts, and beasts were blind engines of the universal fire. Only when Infinite Time struck the shoals of earth did true life begin. Zurvan Akarana, Infinite Time, encompasses all that was, is, and will be, the possible and the impossible. Earth broke open Infinite Time, and from the bleeding wound, Light and Darkness were born, and knew themselves.

Angra Mainyu and Ormaz were first, but they were not alone. Each drop of Infinite Time that bled into reality shaped itself into divinity. From the one came many, and from the many, conflict never-ending. The gods shaped their people, and were shaped in turn.

Ormaz rested on a mountaintop, where the wind had carved the stone into the likeness of men. Ormaz breathed the fire of life into them and made them his. Such was the beginning of dwarves: endurance and heat, cunning and patience.

Madrakka and Maddratcha captured the morning mist in a net of leaves, granting it spirit and flesh. Such was the beginning of elves: forest and dew, magic and a keen eye.

Zaole looked into a puddle after a summer storm and pulled out the reflections of the small folk who had hidden in her imagination. Such was the beginning of gnomes: mud and sky, trees and dappled deer.

Angra Mainyu held the Earth by right of being Eldest, but others disputed that right. Their dispute echoed through all planes of existence. On earth, gods gathered armies and built empires. War ripped the empires apart and devastated all existence.

The sun blew out like a candle flame. The earth stopped cold in its tracks. Ormaz and Angra Mainyu were dispersed, their powers exhausted.

Onto the earth came Anahita. Anahita danced. The earth turned once more. Anahita sang to Infinite Time. Zaole answered. Light came again from the sun.

Onto the earth came Mitras. Mitras called to Infinite Time. Geshurvan, the cosmic bull, was born, bearing within him the memory of all the races of earth. Mitras slew the bull, and from the steaming blood life arose once more, all the plants and animals and men and women. It was from this time that people came to have souls, for they had resided within Infinite Time.

Onto the earth came Madrakka and Maddratcha. Wind blew, rain fell, and the seasons held meaning once more.

Onto the earth came Haoma Two-Fathers. Haoma made from the plants of the earth the elixir of Life. One drop to Ormaz, one drop to Angra Mainyu. A son's duty he fulfilled.

Nothing changes. As it was in the beginning, so it was again. Race fought against race, brother against sister, father against son. Empires rose, and empires fell. Demons and devils preyed upon the souls of men.

But Ela, the soul of Time, saw. Ela, the compassionate, the caring, took pity. His angel Jibril came to Mehemet in the desert.

"Recite! In the name of your lord who created you from a clot of blood!"

The Prophet heard the words and wrote them. He led the people above their mortal ties and created from them the umma, the community of Believers.

God was with him. His words spread outwards, and those who followed remembered after he died. From the east to the west, the Faithful walk the Straight Path.
